The swift industry-wide decline in PC sales will result in Apple’s first non-profitable quarter in three years, … We’re not happy about it, and plan to return to sustained profitability next quarter. We are committed to reducing our channel inventories to normal levels by the end of this quarter, and remain very excited about the new products and programs Apple will be rolling out in 2001.
We took our medicine last quarter and brought our channel inventories back down to about five and a half weeks,
OS X may result in some pent up demand being released, … I think it will become one of the landmark operating systems of our industry when it is released next year.
These are the first personal computers in history with dual processors, … This is the kind of stuff many of our customers do every day and this can save them an hour or two each day.
Some people didn’t like the old mouse. We have many faults, but we listen. We are moving from what some people called the worst mouse to the best mouse in the industry,
We are delighted that Apple is delivering strong growth on every front — revenues, profits and units — and in particular that our unit growth last quarter was 2.5 times higher than the industry average, which leads directly to market share growth. Apple also continues to deliver the best asset management in the industry, ending the quarter with less than one day of inventory.
We went from nothing online to the gold standard in e-commerce.
We’re thrilled to have concluded the best year in Apple’s history. This is the direct result of our focus on innovation and the immense talent and creativity at Apple.
Motorola did the phone. I could imagine other products in the future.
Please be a little more patient with us and we’ll do these things in the correct order,
I think it will be either a triumphant cap on a successful relationship with Disney or the huge beginning of a bountiful new chapter in our relationship with them,
It’s worth the few extra months of effort if there is a chance of continuing our relationship with Disney and our discussions right now are very productive,
If they were all worked out, we’d be having a different conversation today,
Well, uh, if we knew then I probably shouldn’t talk about it,
Whether people will buy a device just to watch video – it’s not clear, … So far the answer’s been no, because there are several devices out which play video and none of them has been successful yet. So, um – so far, nobody’s figured out the right formula.
Selling one million videos in less than 20 days strongly suggests there is a market for legal downloads. Our next challenge is to broaden our content offerings.
We’d like to go after the remaining mainstream flash market. The products are all pretty much the same.
After 10 months of trying to strike a deal with Disney, we’re moving on,
We’ve talked to many of these studios and we know we can get the deal we want,
Al is going to be a terrific director, and we’re excited and honored that he has chosen Apple as his first private sector board to serve on,
Our results this quarter reflect the outstanding performance of ‘Monsters, Inc.,’ … Which is poised to continue with its domestic home video release next month, and earnings from our growing film library, which continues to outperform our expectations.
Even in this extended worldwide downturn, Apple is continuing to be profitable and continuing to innovate.
We’re baffled that a settlement imposed against Microsoft for breaking the law should allow, even encourage, them to unfairly make inroads into education — one of the few markets left where they don’t have monopoly power,
“Monsters, Inc. may become our studio’s fourth blockbuster, and provide ongoing revenues for years to come as part of our growing film library,
It’s all come together for us in our fiscal first quarter which just ended,
Apple had a very decent group of people as their board of directors, but it was time for a change.
It’s a package announcement today. We’re very excited about it.
This is a pretty sweeping change. This will add a tremendous amount of expertise.
We have had a phenomenal response to this product, … We cannot keep up with demand.
I know it is frustrating to some of our investors that we’re not sort of a quarter-to-quarter growth company, … But the fact is our life is measured in pictures, not quarters. And we are increasing our output.
We didn’t have anything to go on, … It was our first film and you know there was sort of a betting pool around here as to how well it would do, and I would say the majority of folks thought it would be less successful than it was. I think we were stunned
It’s high time we officially recognized it with this promotion,
So we think these products are wrong, … We think that video may be the wrong direction to go.
I called Bob and said I wanted to show him something, … We’re both always looking for ways to make content more available to customers.
We heard that Apple was dying, that Apple can’t survive. Every time we convince people we’ve accomplished something at one level, they come up with something new. We’ve convinced them that we’ve taken care of last month’s question.
We convinced people fairly rapidly that survival, at least in the short term, was not an issue.
Apple grew faster than the industry this quarter for the first time in nearly five years
Apple has decided to make Internet Explorer its default browser. We believe Internet Explorer is a really good browser. Internet Explorer is my browser of choice.
Who cares about the Apple II? The Macintosh is the future of Apple, and you’re going to start on it now.
We think this is going to be a strong product for us.
Now, the performance just goes into the stratosphere.
Both of these models are available starting today.
Over one billion songs have now been legally purchased and downloaded around the globe, representing a major force against music piracy and the future of music distribution as we move from CDs to the Internet.
I hope that every customer, artist and music company executive takes a moment today to reflect on what we’ve achieved together during the past three years. Over 1 billion songs have now been legally purchased and downloaded around the globe, representing a major force against music piracy and the future of music distribution as we move from CDs to the Internet
We’re really buying into Bob’s vision, not the other way around
We use industry standard RSS so that anyone can subscribe. You do not even need a Mac.
This ushers in a new generation of iMacs. We started a partnership less than a year ago to make this happen — it’s been incredible how our engineers have bonded and how well this has gone.
With … Intel’s latest dual-core processor under the hood, the new iMac delivers performance that will knock our customers’ socks off.
It’s not a secret we’ve been trying to shoehorn a G5 [processor] into a notebook, and have been unable to do so because of its power consumption.
So today for the first time, I can confirm the rumors that every release of Mac OS X has been compiled for both PowerPC and Intel. This has been going on for the last five years.
2002 is coming in a bit stronger than we planned, with ‘Monsters, Inc.’ crossing the $500 million mark at the worldwide box office to become the second-highest-grossing animated film of all time.
We’ve clearly hit a speed bump, which will result in our earning, before investment gains, approximately $110 million rather than the expected $165 million for the September quarter. Though this slowdown is disappointing, we have so many wonderful new products and programs in the pipeline, including Mac OS X early next year, and remain positive about our future.
Demand for iMac exceeded our most optimistic forecasts
Apple had a great quarter, no question about it. We are very pleased with the strong demand for our Power Macintosh G3 computers, which accounted for 51 percent of all units sold.
Power computing has pioneered direct marketing and sales in the Macintosh market.
We are going to make a great computer even better. The new iMac is far more beautiful and thinner.”
We are going to integrate OpenGL into the Mac OS.
I heard some hisses. Au contraire. I think it’s the best browser on the platform.
Is it an inappropriate, unfair use of our copyrighted work? It seems pretty clear that it is.
Though it’s likely we will not forge a new relationship with Disney beyond our current deal, we clearly have slowed down the process of picking a new partner to see how this game of musical chairs will end, and who the new CEO of Disney will be,
Now instead of lugging an old amp around, you can lug a PowerBook around
2002 is coming in a bit stronger than we planned, with ‘Monsters, Inc.’ crossing the $500 million mark at the worldwide box office to become the second-highest-grossing animated film of all time
In our track record over the last few years, we’ve only had one product that we’ve introduced that hasn’t met our expectations in its first quarter of sales, and that is our G4 cube, … If we haven’t hit it right on the market with the G4 cube, well, we’re just going to keep working on it until we do

Demand for iMac exceeded our most optimistic forecasts,
Apple had a terrific quarter — we sold a record number of Power Macintosh G3 computers, customers love our new PowerBooks, Apple earned its highest profit in years and we ended the quarter with the lowest inventory level among the major PC players,
Those users haven’t been upgraded because of viability concerns about Apple, which I think we’ve overcome, … And we haven’t given them a good product in a long time.

I think it’s hard to overestimate the plate tectonic movement of this deal, … I think it’s just the beginning.
It’s a stunner and yes, it does video,
We are going to integrate OpenGL into the Mac OS,
You’re not going to have to lug around 20 MB of Java 2 on your back to throw into Windows every time you want to run your app. It’s going to be there right out of the box on every Mac,
PDF is the richest content on the Web, and we’re going to view it native,
(This Mac is) stunningly beautiful,
We would love to sell them even cheaper, if you guys could help get the euro up a bit,
We are thrilled to report the best quarter in Apple’s history.
We are thrilled to report the best quarter in Apple’s history. We are working on more wonderful products for 2006, and I can’t wait to see what our customers think of them.
Anyone can subscribe. You don’t even need a Mac.
That’s what our surveys show, and [Apple is] probably doing the same research we’re doing.
at least one major [product] announcement during his presentation.
Well, something had to leak,
Today, we are bringing it to the 20th country, which is Japan
We’ve got a lot of Japanese content on the store and we’ll be adding even more as the months go on, … We think it’s going to set the standard for online music pricing in Japan.
We said we’d be shipping by next June and we are on track to have that be a true statement.
We’re working on that too, but I’m not so sure it will be successful.
We are on track to do that.
was bleeding money.
It is not clear that buying songs over the air makes economic sense. I am skeptical because of the cost…but we will see.
If they want to raise the prices, it means that they are getting greedy.
Apple’s timing…could hardly have been better.
to discover the deep sources of his character and motivation; what makes him exceptional as well as what makes him real… Where he got his unusual ideas about leadership, management and the creative process… How he had been changed by his years of wealth and celebrity and by his years of struggle and failure.
Look, we have to get this thing under a thousand dollars. But we can afford to pay up to that because we have to live with these things for five years. We don’t want to buy something that’s going to be obsolete in nine months.
The problem with that is, we’re still competing with piracy, … the consumer will not like that. It will basically be a message to the consumer saying, ‘go back to piracy.’
We’ve got five or six things to tell you about today, so let’s get started.
You’ve given us the time to get this turned around and get the volumes back up, and we deeply appreciate it,
We are now in the phase of development where the foundational stuff is behind us,
Our competitor gives away the player, but they charge you big bucks if you want to broadcast anything,
We’re going to keep going until we’re faster than those guys,
We’re doing what we know how to do right now really well,
Disney and Apple are offering customers a new and exciting way to experience television,
It’s never been done before, where you could buy hit TV shows and buy them online the day after they’re shown.
This is the direct result of our focus on innovation and the immense talent and creativity at Apple. We could not be more excited about the new products we’re working on for 2006.
We’re thrilled to have concluded the best year in Apple’s history.
He is my buddy. I would hate to see what his enemies look like.
Pascal, wipe them out…all of them.
I think this is really pretty big and I think it’s just the beginning,
We think this is a real breakthrough. It’s never before been done, where you can buy hit prime-time TV shows the day after they’re broadcast.
Oh, I never realized that those spaces were for the emotionally handicapped!
It’s a non-issue for us… We sell computers.
Our relationship with Microsoft is kind of like a marriage. It’s terrific 99 percent of the time. And one percent of the time we argue, usually over multimedia. And in life, that’s not a bad ratio.
We have modified the Mac OS so it can boot over a network. It thinks it’s doing it locally, but it’s doing it on a server.
Maybe it’s telling you to revert back to a Macintosh.
[Apple wants to make] not only the most powerful Macintosh built, but the most powerful [system] in the whole industry.
We want to bring Java back to the desktop in a really big way. I’m here today to personally tell you we are working hard to make Mac the best Java delivery vehicle on the planet. The biggest thing we are doing is we are going to bundle Java 2 SE into every single copy of Mac OS X [the upcoming Macintosh operating system] that we ship later on this year.
And you guys were putting Java in light bulbs and everything else,
The reason for that is Sun and Apple haven’t worked that closely on Java in the past.
People are going to bring them home to work on something Sunday morning, they’re not going to be able to get their kids away from them, and maybe someday they may even buy a second one to use at home.
I’m hoping our software strategies are boring to you, because they’re not changing every year, … That is our strategy.
It’s like magic. You take away the machinery, and it’s just like magic. It’s amazing.
This decision is consistent with our strategy to focus all of our software development resources on extending the Macintosh operating system.
There has been a lot of speculation and a lot of rumors and I get to end them today.
We completely missed the boat on CD-read/write drives, … We completely blew this one.
We are going to lead this movement, and the horse we’re going to ride is open protocols and open-source server software,
It is piracy, not overt online music stores, which is our main competitor.
We want to stand at the intersection of computers and humanism
Apple is leading the digital music revolution, but at its core, it’s all about the music,
Fit and Finish
That same innovation, that same engineering, that same talent applied where we don’t run up against the fact that Microsoft got this monopoly, and boom! We have 75 per cent market share,
Customers think the price is really good where it is. We’re trying to compete with piracy — we’re trying to pull people away from piracy and say, ‘You can buy these songs legally for a fair price.’ But if the price goes up a lot, they’ll go back to piracy. Then, everybody loses.
[We want to] get new products out there and have new ways to buy them. I think if we manage the top line, the bottom line will follow. I don’t know what the future will bring, but we’re working as fast as we can.
We’ve gone through the operating system and looked at everything and asked how can we simplify this and make it more powerful at the same time,
We are very careful about what features we add because we can’t take them away.
I think this is the start of something really big. Sometimes that first step is the hardest one, and we’ve just taken it.
Here’s to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes… the ones who see things differently — they’re not fond of rules… You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can’t do is ignore them because they change things… they push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do.
It took us three years to build the NeXT computer. If we’d given customers what they said they wanted, we’d have built a computer they’d have been happy with a year after we spoke to them – not something they’d want now.”
So we went to Atari and said, ‘Hey, we’ve got this amazing thing, even built with some of your parts, and what do you think about funding us? Or we’ll give it to you. We just want to do it. Pay our salary, we’ll come work for you.’ And they said, ‘No.’ So then we went to Hewlett-Packard, and they said, ‘Hey, we don’t need you. You haven’t got through college yet.
To turn really interesting ideas and fledgling technologies into a company that can continue to innovate for years, it requires a lot of disciplines
In most people’s vocabularies, design means veneer. It’s interior decorating. It’s the fabric of the curtains of the sofa. But to me, nothing could be further from the meaning of design. Design is the fundamental soul of a human-made creation that ends up expressing itself in successive outer layers of the product or service
…almost everything – all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure – these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart
Why join the navy if you can be a pirate?
Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works
Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary
Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower
