DMB (digital multimedia broadcasting) – 디지털 멀티미디어 방송

DMB[디엠비]는 시속 200 km로 달리는 차 안에서도 음악, 문자, 데이터, 동영상 등 다양한 콘텐츠를 언제 어디서나 즐길 수 있는 고품질 방송 서비스를 가리킨다. 미국, EU, 캐나다 등 외국에서는 고품질 디지털 오디오 방송을 의미하는 DAB (digital audio broadcasting)라는 용어와 DAR (digital audio radio), DRB (digital radio broadcasting) 등 다양한 용어로 불리고 있지만, 우리나라는 2002년 말 정보통신부가 방송과 통신이 융합된 이 서비스에 대해 동영상 서비스까지를 포괄하여 나타낼 수 있는 용어로 통일해 사용키로 하면서 DMB라는 용어가 등장하게 되었다. DMB는 2.6 GHz 대의 주파수를 사용하는 위성DMB와 800 MHz 대의 주파수를 사용하는 지상파DMB로 나뉘는데, 우리나라에서는 두 가지 서비스 모두를 도입하기 위한 제반 작업이 2004년 말부터 진행 중이다. 우리나라 정부는 세계 최초로 DMB 서비스에 성공하여 CDMA에 이은 우리나라 수출 주력상품으로 육성할 계획을 가지고 있다.
